Scientific studies connecting your oral health and your overall health have been making headlines in recent years. The research links gums disease to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, strokes, respiratory diseases, and complications in pregnancy. Gum disease is also the most common cause of bad breath, bleeding gums, receding gums, loss of bone supporting the teeth and eventually the loss of teeth. If you have any of these symptoms of gum disease, please take them seriously:

·         Bleeding gums
·         Swollen or tender gums
·         Persistent bad breath
·         Obvious plaque or calculus
·         Sensitive teeth
·         Spaces developing between teeth
·         Receding gums (teeth appear longer)
·         Loose or mobile teeth

Millions of Americans have these symptoms, but, because the signs are easy to ignore, many are not getting the treatment they need. Early treatment is crucial so I am happy to announce that our office offers the Perio Protect Method®.

The Perio Protect Method® includes a non-invasive prescription dental tray to place medication into periodontal pockets, the space between teeth and gum tissue where disease-causing bacteria grow. The prescription tray is custom-made for your mouth by a dental laboratory to hold medication in periodontal pockets and prevent the medication from being quickly washed away. We will prescribe the appropriate medication for your condition, along with an individualized treatment plan. The first two weeks of treatment require more frequent applications of the medication. As healing occurs, we will modify usage instructions until you are ready to follow a simple maintenance regime. For most people, treatment requires only minutes each day.

This technique is designed to be used with brushing and flossing and can be combined with other treatments like professional deep cleanings when necessary. The purpose of the Perio Protect Method® is to decrease, whenever possible, the need for invasive procedures.

Patients who follow the Method describe the tray delivery of medications as comfortable and report positive side effects of fresher breath and whiter teeth.

Now is the time for you to take control of your smile and your health. Phone us for an appointment to see how we may best serve you. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Savanah Hamby

In 2009, Life Style Dentistry, participated along with NWAMotherlode.com in the 'Divine in '09' smile makeover give away. We had the pleasure to meet Savanah. Below is the article from the Benton County Sunday paper.

This mom deserved to smile her biggest smile and be confident with it. Dr. Hubbs and her team worked over a few months span to make this happen for her. In the end, the results were worth her time in our office! We got to know a great women and help her be the best mom she could be!

Local mom granted 'Divine' smile makeover

NWAMotherlode.com, a destination Web site for local mothers, is known around town for its cool giveaways. From spa days to the top-of-the-line washer/dryer combo that kept moms buzzing for a week, Motherlode is in the business of making moms smile.

One of the site's most recent giveaways took that goal a step further. It was a life-changing smile makeover, courtesy of Life Style Dentistry in Rogers.

Local mom Savanah Hamby, the mother to Sawyer, recently completed the months-long smile makeover.

The price tag on Hamby's dental bill would have totaled more than $10,000, but Dr. Ann Hubbs provided the work for free. This gift was one of the several in NWAMotherlode.com's "Divine in '09" series of giveaways.

Now that Dr. Hubbs has transformed Hamby's smile, she's ready for the final phase of the giveaway -- a hair/make-up makeover and professional photographs. About You Salon & Spa is providing a complimentary hair/make-up makeover session and NWAMotherlode.com sponsor Melinda Worthington of MJW Photoraphy is providing the free "after" photographs.

Hamby, 25, has a new job as an educator at Pages of Parenting in Fayetteville. She's been self-conscious about her smile since her tooth was chipped by a rock at age 13. Although the chip was repaired, she always dreamed of straight, white teeth with no gaps.

Hamby joked at the beginning of her makeover that, ironically, she never wears make-up, cuts her own hair and had always hated her smile.

"The new smile is FABULOUS," Hamby said. "I feel so much more confident now, and I've been flashing a huge smile to everyone I see. It's amazing how one little thing can make such an impact on your self-confidence. Honestly, I feel more beautiful than I've ever felt."

"Savanah was an absolute pleasure to take care of, and I wish her all the best," Hubbs said. "She truly has a gorgeous smile now, but the 'makeover' process really went beyond cosmetic touches. We wanted her smile to not only look great, but to be as healthy as it could be. To me, a great smile is a healthy smile."

Hamby was chosen from among a group of Northwest Arkansas women vying for the popular giveaway. Not only did the mom receive six veneers on her front teeth, Hubbs also made sure that any underlying dental issues were handled first. Hamby received root canals, new fillings and overall whitening.

Hamby said her takeaway experience at Life Style Dentistry was that Dr. Hubbs and her staff are professional but also highly personable. "The staff is incredibly friendly, and they really take an interest in their patients. And it's not just because it's me. I hear them speaking to other patients the same way."

Giveaways from local businesses help drive traffic to NWAMotherlode.com and generate online word-of-mouth referrals for retailers. These giveaways have included jewelry from Underwood's, spa days, a mantle-size family portrait and parties at Bath Junkie and Fast Lane Entertainment, as well as Walton Arts Center tickets.

Co-creators Shannon Magsam and Gwen Rockwood are encouraged by the site's growth and its ability to offer women relevant content for their busy lives, as well as valuable giveaways like the smile makeover.

"In an economy where may mothers are cutting their budgets, NWAMotherlode.com not only offers them entertaining information, but also fives moms chances to win some fabulous giveaways that they might not have splurged on for themselves," Magsam said.

Every week, thousands of local moms visit NWAMotherload.com. Launched in May 2008, the Web site is an interactive, online magazine containing information and resources for Northwest Arkansas moms and families. More information about the site can be found by visiting nwamotherlode.com.

For more information, call Magsam at 479-409-0424 or Rockwood at 479-409-8242.

ADA MEETING IN LAS VEGAS 2011

This past October, Life Style Dentistry had the opportunity to visit the wonderful city of LAS VEGAS for the annual American Dental Association meetings.

We learned a lot of valuable information and have brought it back to Arkansas! One of our main focuses was internet marketing-how to capture our patients from the internet. We learned that most everyone uses search engines to find their dentists.

Since then we have been busy updating our website at www.lifestyledentistrynwa.com, creating our blog, making our Facebook patient friendly (Life Style Dentistry) and even created a Twitter account (@drannhubbs)!

We hope everyone has a great week!

Hello! Welcome to our blog! We are excited to update you on the latest information and technology that are coming to dentistry. Each week we will bring you a topic to inform you about dentistry. Please post comments! We would love to hear from you!

Here is some information about tooth decay:

What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is a destruction of the tooth enamel. It occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, pop, raisins, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.

How Do I Prevent Tooth Decay?

You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:
  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental cleaner.
  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking.
  • Check with your dentist about use of supplemental fluoride, which strengthens your teeth, and about use of dental sealants (a plastic protective coating) applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (where decay often starts) to protect them from decay.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral examination.

Aren't Cavities Just Kid's Stuff?

No. Changes that occur with aging make cavities an adult problem, too. Recession of the gums away from the teeth, combined with an increased incidence of periodontal (gum) disease, can expose tooth roots to plaque. Tooth roots are covered with cementum, a softer tissue than enamel. They are susceptible to decay and are more sensitive to touch and to hot and cold. The majority of people over age 50 have tooth-root decay.
Decay around the edges, or margins, of fillings is also common to older adults. Because many older adults lacked benefits of fluoride and modern preventive dental care when they were growing up, they often have a number of dental fillings. Over the years, these fillings may weaken and tend to fracture and leak around the edges. Bacteria accumulate in these tiny crevices causing acid to build up which leads to decay.
